“Sustainability and Clubhouse Management” with Steve Ashkin, President, The Ashkin Group
The momentum of sustainability has found a like-minded advocate in the world of sports. An important aspect of sustainability is cleaning and how it is undertaken. As individuals participate in sports for their health and pleasure, the way a facility is maintained can add to or detract from those results. The health impact of chemicals, the consequences of products that create waste, these are important considerations for clubhouse managers looking to create a healthy facility environment while producing minimal impact on the environment at large. This is increasingly becoming a member-driven issue in the light of topics like climate change and sustainability. This session, led by an expert who is considered to be the father of green cleaning, will provide practical advice and guidelines for country clubs to improve their cleaning procedures for the sake of staff, members and the environment.

Among his many accomplishments, Steve currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Green Sports Alliance which is committed to seeing all types of sports and sporting facilities reduce their environmental footprint and promote healthy, sustainable communities where we live and play.

“Bye Bye Potable Water” with Bob Young, Golf Course Superintendent, Carolina Country Club
In this session, Bob will discuss how and what processes Carolina Country Club went through to get off city water for its irrigation source. (CMAA Competency: Golf, Sports & Recreation Management; Credit: 1 Chapter Education)

Bob is currently employed at Carolina County Club in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a National Certification as Golf Course Superintendent.  Working on the golf course has always been Bob's dream.   Growing up in Henderson, North Carolina, he began working at Henderson Country Club at the age of 14.  With the support and encouragement of Jimmy Gurkin, the pro-superintendent at the time, he pursued the career in this industry.  After High School, he attended North Carolina State University receiving an associate’s degree in Agronomy.  Upon graduation in 1982, Bob took his first job at Scotfield Country Club in Halifax County.  He quickly learned how to become a mechanic, manager, and grounds crew in every respect.  That experience has shaped his understanding of the industry from the ground up.  The challenges did not stop with that first job.  Bob renovated Lochmere Golf Club in Cary, North Carolina, and, while still overseeing that course, took on the construction and opening of Devil's Ridge Golf Club in Holly Springs.  He later moved to Greenville County Club, in Greenville, North Carolina for a renovation there, as well.  Bob has been at Carolina Country Club for 18 years and has overseen the course renovation , the building of a water harvesting pond to get Carolina Country Club off City water, and will be undergoing the renovation of the greens to bermuda grass this spring.

In addition to the love of the golf course, Bob also enjoys his bible study, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

"Leaders for Tomorrow" with Perry Williams, Former NFL New York Giant and Two-Time Super Bowl Champion
In this session, Perry will focus on leadership, accountability, teamwork and respect. He will also touch on his 7 Steps to Success Pyramid.
(CMAA Competency: Leadership; Credit: 2 Chapter Education)

img#23 Former NFL New York Giant and two-time Super Bowl Champion, Perry Williams, began his journey from humble beginnings, but it was ingrained in him early on that hard work, dedication and the unwavering desire to gain knowledge and its application are the building blocks and formula for success. Whether it is athletics, education or business, Perry has been a team player in the strict sense of the team, leading, motivating and inspiring those around him in a quest to perform at a collective level that defines the very essence of a true champion.

On a team of stars, Perry was an unsung hero and silent leader of the New York Giants Football team for eleven seasons (1983-1994) as the starting right corner back for one of the most storied and dynamic defenses in the National Football League history, culminating with two NFL Super Bowl Championships (1986-1987) and (1990-1991). Impressively, Perry holds the record for the most games played as a defensive back (corner) in the history of the Giants – a testament to his dedication and consistency.

Perhaps Perry’s greatest accomplishment as a New York Giant was not his all-pro honors or Super
Bowl Championships, but rather that he was benefactor and is now a director of outreach programs for the New York Giants Degree Completion Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University, which has since become the model adopted by the National Football League and its member teams for the benefit of its players. In addition to being the director of business development of Gator Communications Group LLC printing firm, Perry is an adjunct professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University, teaching leadership classes.

Perry was selected as a recipient of the Sports Ethic Fellow Humanitarian Award (1995), Alex Baker
Memorial Humanitarian Award (2011), Trey Whitfield Foundation Leadership Award (2012) and
Platinum Minds Community Leaders Award (2014).

Perry’s other athletic accomplishments include: NCAA All-American, All-ACC Football status and Former World Record holder in the 200 Meter Track and Field (1982 ACC Track and Field championship).

Perry holds a Masters of Public Administration degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and studied Criminal Justice/Sociology at North Carolina State University and Fairleigh Dickinson University where he earned a B.A. degree.

Perry has been a corporate motivational speaker and spokesman for: Exxon/Mobil, Starbucks Coffee, IBM, United Parcel Service and Verizon Wireless. He has lectured at hundreds of schools, colleges and universities as well as other respected organizations such as the United Way Foundation.

The legendary Hall of Fame NFL Coach Bill Parcells once said: “Perry Williams was the best conditioned player I have ever coached, but he is also one of the greatest leaders and motivators, inspiring young and old around him. He is one of the finest men that I have had the privilege to know both on and off the football field."
