“Understanding Your Role in Water Use Efficiency and Sustainability” with Patrick O'Brien and Chris Hartwiger
Patrick O’Brien and Chris Hartwiger of the USGA have nearly seen it all in their collective time together, traveling from one golf course to the next offering their expert evaluation and educating invested parties on key issues affecting our industry. In this session, Pat and Chris will share their expertise on how to improve your golf course.

Presentation highlights include:
•    Ways to manage water use efficiency.
•    Understanding why it is so important to focus on water management practices for the health of the game.
•    Learning that good golf conditions and economic sustainability are not mutually exclusive.

imgPatrick O'Brien is director of the USGA Green Section's Southeast Region, which includes the states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and, internationally, Bermuda. He joined the USGA Green Section in 1979 after receiving his Master's Degree in Agronomy from West Virginia University and Bachelor's Degree from Marietta College in Ohio. He was born in the small town of Emsworth, PA, just minutes away from downtown Pittsburgh and his two favorite sports teams, the Pirates and Steelers.

His main responsibility is heading the team that provides USGA Turfgrass Advisory Service in the region. Annual clients are approximately 250 golf courses, including public, private, military and resort facilities. Additionally, Pat speaks at more than 50 turfgrass seminars, university and technical schools and Green Committee meetings. His and the USGA Green Section’s goal is to help all courses and golf course superintendents to become as successful as possible each year.

O'Brien and his wife Nancy live in Macon, GA, with their twin daughters, Maggie and Katie, and basset hound Coco.

imgChris Hartwiger is located in Birmingham, AL, and works with Patrick O'Brien in the Southeast Region. He conducts most of his visits in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee, with the goal of helping superintendents develop the best management program possible for their location. Between visits, he enjoys speaking to industry-related groups and writing articles for various turfgrass publications.

Prior to joining the staff, Hartwiger received a B.A. degree at the College of William & Mary and a Masters Degree at North Carolina State University. While at North Carolina State, he completed a thesis on "Lightweight Roller Use on Bentgrass Putting Greens" under the direction of Drs. Joseph DiPaola and Charles Peacock.

He was born in Yorktown, VA, and his interest in the turf industry began humbly at an early age by helping his father with a small lawn care business. He soon caught the golf bug and has spent many years either working on golf courses or playing golf.

Today, both he and his wife Kathy are avid golfers. His wife won the 2002 Women's Mid-Amateur and has competed in more than 25 USGA Championships.
