“The Low Country State of Mind”

The South Carolina Low Country (or Lowcountry) is a term used to describe the Palmetto State's central and southern coastal counties including Georgetown, Charleston, Colleton, Beaufort, and Jasper. The coastline contains many salt marshes and estuaries, as well as a few natural ports.

The area contains more than its share of culture and history. Of special interest is the Gullah influence on St. Helena Island, and the other European settlements near Beaufort and the Sea Islands. The Gullah speak an English-based creole language containing numerous African words and large influences from African spoken languages in sentence structure.  The history of the colonial period of South Carolina has its beginnings in French, Spanish, and English attempts to colonize North America.

The 2018 Carolinas Chapter Summer Conference has been carefully planned to not only engage attendees in 12 hours of education (included a 6-hour CMI Workshop), but to also immerse everyone in the “Low Country State of Mind.”  By visiting six different clubs in Bluffton and Hilton Head Island over the three-day event, we hope that you will feel the welcoming hospitality of the area and the host clubs.

NETWORKING EVENTS:  The Low Country through the ages – then (Colleton) and now (Sea Pines)

Before there was the Low Country, there was the marsh.

Tonight, we celebrate and sample the lush resources the marsh provides, taking into account the influences on regional cooking, the spice routes of old, and the ingredients of the Sea Islands.

Embrace these deep roots of the Low Country. Taste the traditions and experience the history as you connect with your Carolinas Chapter family.
